A Message from the Principal...
CONFERENCES
I hope that the recent parent teacher conference was as successful for you as it was for our staff. Learning is a partnership. The most learning takes place when student, teacher, and family are communicating and working together. One way that school communicates learning is through the report card. Being that learning is a continuum and the fact that the standards are written as, “By the end of the year the student will,” PLEASE be sure to be accessing the on-line report card to check how your student is progressing, and to work with him/her on “owning” their progress. If students understand their strengths and weaknesses, and set a goal for making growth, they will be better able to make that growth.
As a reminder, to access report cards, go to https://powerschool.hssd.k12.wi.us/public/. Once logged in, click on the Standards tab. If you are having trouble logging in, click on the “Having Trouble Signing In?” link under the login. If you still have trouble, please contact our school office at 662-8800 and we can assist you.
PLAYGROUND
Thank you to Mr. Gillette and Mr. Lannoye for “manning” the playground informational table during conferences. We are excited to move forward with our planning and fundraising. Look for more information to come soon regarding the next steps in making our inclusive playground a reality.

"Painting Hope" Assembly on February 23rd.
Eric Samuel Timm, a painter will be presenting a show called "Painting Hope" to our students. During his 9:00 presentation, he will be creating two paintings that we will be able to keep at our school. His message for students is about making positive choices related to how we treat one another. As a special treat, Mr. Timm will also be presenting an evening show that is geared toward families. This will take place at Lineville Intermediate school starting at 6:30 PM in the gym. This looks to be an awesome event and learning experience for our kids.

Protecting on Line Passwords and Creating Appropriate Screen Names Our kids love life online, but it is up to us to help teach them how they can protect their devices and their personal information. Here are some tips from Common Sense Media for protecting online passwords and creating appropriate screen names. Screen name tips to share with kids: ● Avoid using your real name. ● Skip personal details - no ages, addresses or phone numbers. ● Consider a screen name's effect on others (make sure it's readable and not offensive. Password tips to share with kids: ● Make passwords eight or more characters long (longer passwords are harder to crack than shorter ones). ● Include letters, numbers, and symbols (these make it harder to guess passwords). ● Change your password at least every six months (this way, even if someone does guess a password, he or she won't be able to get into your account for long). ● Don't use your nickname, phone number, or address as your password. ● Give your password to your parent or guardian (they will help you remember it if you forget it). ● Sharing your password with your friends is not a good idea (even if you trust them, they might unintentionally do something that puts you or your information at risk). ● Create a password that's unique but memorable. For more information about creating appropriate screen names and passwords talk to your child’s library media/technology integration specialist. If you would like to learn more about how to keep your child safe online please click here for Common Sense Media. Mark Your Calendars for Summer School!

By: Becky Wright, 2nd- 4th Grade School Counselor Through a variety of books, videos, songs, and roleplays, 2nd-4th grade students spent the month of February focusing on empathy and how to help students who may be targeted or bullied. We reviewed types of bullying, clearly defined how to identify bullying behaviors, and then focused on strategies to help each other. It was heartwarming to watch the students gain an understanding of how to demonstrate empathy towards their peers. When students can develop empathy, it really causes them to take a step back and think about how their actions, words, and thoughts can have a ripple effect on others. Please try to encourage your students to apply their strategies and skills at home as well through conversations with you, interactions with siblings, play dates with friends, etc. “Empathy is about standing in someone else’s shoes, seeing with his or her eyes, and feeling with his or heart.”

As part of our 3rd grade Immigration Unit, all third grade students will be immigrating to the United States through Ellis Island. We are setting up a model of Ellis Island in the Library Media Center. This is the seventh year we have performed this Quest at Bay Harbor, and we need your volunteer help. We are asking Moms, Dads and others in our community to help us with this program. Would you be available on Monday, March 2nd, from 12:30 p.m.-3:00 pm to help with the Ellis Island Quest? You will be one of the “investigators” on Ellis Island that poses questions to the students and checks over their papers to be certain they have proper identification. We want to be certain that these new immigrant families do not carry disease, and that they have a sponsor or a job that would be beneficial to the United States. Your parts are scripted. All we ask of you is that you enjoy the morning while you help the students pass through Ellis Island. Our goal is to have the students experience first hand the feelings that immigrant families felt as they entered their “new world.” Please CLICK HERE for the form to complete if you could help out! P.S. If you can’t volunteer for the half day, please come and watch for a while. You will enjoy the experience. Thanks for all your help getting your student ready for this day.
