A Message from the Principal,
Sailor Families,
Coding Through a Winter Wonderland
This week, classes have been spending an hour in our library space moving through different coding/programming stations. It has been amazing to see the energy and engagement as students are pushed to think creatively and critically to problem solve each of these stations. It is important for our students to be able to spend time working on activities like this that involve so much thinking and working together. I am so impressed with our Sailors! Make sure to ask you child all about it by the end of the week.
HSEF and BH PTO partner to fund teacher grants
I am excited to announce that approximately 13 teachers got their “Donor’s Choose” grants funded because our Howard-Suamico Educational Foundation partnered with our wonderful Parent Teacher Organization to make it a reality. The focus of the majority of the projects were flexible classroom seating and STEM related items. With my school budget alone, none of this would have happened. We are definitely better together! Thank you to everyone who has helped support Bay Harbor financially at any level!
Upcoming
As a reminder, we have an early release on December 7th. In addition, we have Holiday concert dress rehearsal on Thursday the 13th and concerts on the 14th at 9:30 and 1:30. It’s an exciting and BUSY time of year for all! Be on the lookout for more information regarding parking for the concert in next week’s newsletter.
I look forward to seeing you all next week!

Volunteers are Still Needed for the School Store!
Student Leadership Council is once again having a School Store each month.
While we will be having some of our students help at School Store this year, we are not able to run a successful school store without some help from our amazing adult volunteers. Our school store will be on the first Friday of every month (except for February which will take place on the second Friday of the month since there is no school on the 1st). We would like to enlist 4-5 parent volunteers to help out from 10:30 – 12:45. Students will shop before their recess and the first recess starts at 10:40. Responsibilities included in helping out are: set-up, selling and assisting students with their purchases, making change and closing-up.
If you are interested in helping out on any or all of the dates, please CLICK HERE to print and complete the form and return it to school by Friday, December 7th.
Please consider supporting the Student Leadership Council by volunteering to help with the school store.
Thank you,
Mrs. Van Enkevort -Student Council Advisor

Please have your child dress for the Cold Weather!
Cold weather is here, so please make sure that your child has snow pants, boots, a hat and gloves at school for recess. Waterproof gloves are best. Students will go outside for recess every day unless the outside temperature with wind chill is below zero.
Label your Child's Outerwear!
Please make sure to label your child's outerwear. As you can imagine, we have many pairs of black boots and snow pants in the building and if they are labeled, we can find the owner if they are found. Thank you!

PTO IS ON FACEBOOK and TWITTERBudget Season - From your School Board
Tax Levy – A Long Term Investment At this time of year our property tax bills begin to arrive. During the budget process each year, there are things the School Board can control, and things the Board cannot control. The Howard-Suamico School District is driven to work with families and the community to ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills to succeed in a changing world. This objective is something we can control, and our budgets are created not only for the needs of today but also for future use. There is a continuous focus on making sure that the long-term per pupil expenditure is fiscally responsible (ex., limited open enrollment, adjustments to benefits, and increasing partnerships with members of the business community). Another factor in our control is the levy rate. Since the 2011-12 school year, this rate has decreased from 9.73 to the 9.19 rate that we have maintained for 4 years. The information on our tax bills that the District does not control is the total property value within our area, as well as the increase or decrease to individual parcels of property. When the stable tax rate of 9.19 is applied to changing valuation amounts, the result changes from year to year. As taxpayers in our District, the Board of Education focuses on ensuring effective stewardship of the tax revenue we receive, not only for today but for the long term. If you have questions for the Board of Education, please reach out to your Board member located in this article.
