A Message from the Principal,
Welcome to October, Sailor Families!
Rain, Rain, go away! I hope your basements are surviving this abnormal amount of water! We began our “picture day” yesterday by shuttling student by student off the bus and to the nearest door as to not have them get completely soaked prior to the pictures. I appreciate all of my crew who jumped in to do so and the picture volunteers who helped each child look the best they could prior to the snap of the picture. Later in the day, as I moved from class to class, I did so with amazement as to the high level of teaching and learning going on. Bay Harbor is a GREAT PLACE because of so many reasons. Thank you for being a part of it! Here are just a few updates:
ALICE
With school safety being a top priority for all, our district has been heavily trained in ALICE! ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. This is in place of the old traditional lockdown where all of the class hid in the corner of the room during a “Dangerous Someone” intruder. We have been teaching about ALICE for over 3 years in our District and the students and staff are better for it! This week, I am meeting with each grade level/class and having developmentally appropriate conversations about safety. I want students to feel like school is the safest place around and also that they know enough to make the best decision and follow the directions in an emergency.
Giving Tree Food Drive
Serving-Learning-Achieving----TOGETHER is the slogan in our district. The first part, Serving, is who we are. We want to help those around us who need it. We have always had a wonderful partnership with our local food pantry and we will only make that stronger with a food drive to stock the shelves. It is going on NOW through October 11th. Any non-perishable items are welcome, but here are some key needs: Mac & cheese, Canned pasta, Canned spaghetti sauce, soup, peanut butter, Cereal, Applesauce, tuna fish, Boxed rice and potato sides. Thank you for your partnership with this.
Because we are not just locally aware, but globally, we are also asking each child to bring in ONE QUARTER to support a meal for a hungry child and a cause called Feed My Starving Children. At our assembly we watched a video <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ech5XOryipM> that showed more about what our 4th graders are going to be taking part in soon- packaging bags of food for the hungry around the world.
Bay Harbor PTO Donation Drive
There have been family donations coming in over the last week, but to sustain our PTO budget and be able to provide all of the enhancements we have at our school without fundraising, please locate the pink slip and information that came home last week and donate your $40 today. We appreciate it!
As always, we greatly appreciate your partnership on this learning journey!

Bay Harbor is currently holding a FOOD DRIVE for the Giving Tree food pantry in our community.
The food drive will run through the 11th
Bins will be located in the main hallway at school. The Giving Tree has shared they are in need of the following items:
- Mac & cheese
- Canned pasta
- Canned spaghetti sauce
- soup
- peanut butter
- Cereal
- Applesauce
- tuna fish
- Boxed rice and potato sides
Last year Bay Harbor collect 739 pounds of food items! Our 4th grade will be volunteering at the Giving Tree on Oct 31.
Bay Harbor 4th graders will be volunteering at the "Feed My Starving Children" mobile packing meal event on Oct. 8th and are currently having a "donate a Quarter" drive in support of needy families.
Do you know that one meal costs less than a quarter, so wouldn't it be awesome if each Bay Harbor student would donate just one quarter to feed a child in need?
This "QUARTER COLLECTION" is currently in progress through Friday. There will be a jar in the main hallway to collect quarters before the start of school, then the jar will be moved into the school office.
Thank you in advance!

Picture Day Order Forms due back by Tuesday, October 8th!
Yesterday was Picture day at Bay Harbor and your child should have brought home an order form from Harmann's to order pictures if you so desire. These are due back next week Tuesday! Another Note: On the order envelope, some students faces may look a little red due to the ink used in printing these. Please know that the finished pictures will be color corrected. Picture Retake Day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 6th. Golden Apple Awards Nominations
The Golden Apple Awards are meant to improve community awareness around the awesome things happening in education around the greater Green Bay area. Students can show their appreciation by nominating a teacher by completing the on line nomination form by October 31st. Click Here for the on line Nomination form. A Special "Thank You" to Jamie Westlund, Kendra Myers, and Michelle Marchand for volunteering to help on our Picture Day yesterday. You are much appreciated! Insights into Innovation
Brand new to HSSD this year are the Innovation courses for all k-4 students. This course meets once per week for 30 minutes. Kara Bunkelman is teaching all K-2 classes and Kim DeTennis is teaching grades three & four. The K-4 Innovation Course will provide students with critical thinking experiences through the exploration of computer science as a collaborative and engaging discipline. Students will learn about computing systems, algorithms and programming, impacts of computing, and digital citizenship while developing strong practices and character in a digital world. Each month we will be sharing resources with you, our Bay Harbor parents and guardians. Our hope is that these resources assist you in raising children in the Digital Age. We highly recommend accessing the parent resources found on the Common Sense Media website and scroll to “Parents Need to Know.” A great resource to check out relating to our current unit on Digital Citizenship is on Privacy and Online Safety. Please feel free to reach out to Kara Bunkelman ([email protected]) or Kim DeTennis ([email protected]) with any questions regarding Innovation. DONORS CHOOSE - HELP SUPPORT HSSD SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS
