Welcome Back Sailor Families,
It has been another wonderful start to the school year at Bay Harbor. Happy kids, Happy parents, and Happy staff are easy measures of a GREAT SCHOOL. I personally thank you for all that you do to prepare your kids to be learners and good people. I would like to take this opportunity to cover some key things:
Morning Drop Off / Afternoon Pick-up:
If at any point you are coming into the building with or without your child, you need to be sure to park your car in a marked parking spot. We can’t leave vehicles unattended in the front of the school...even for a short time. During morning drop off, starting Monday, September 22nd, students will need to enter the school on their own and head to the classrooms independently. Parents will no longer be able to walk their child to the classroom. If you need to go to the classroom for any reason, or if a special circumstance comes up, please stop in the office to sign in and the teacher will be contacted. This practice is consistent with other elementary schools in the district. Please contact me with any questions.
ALICE
Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. You all received notice about our enhancement to the teaching / reaction to a “Lockdown” in the event of an extreme situation. The safety of our students is a top priority and sadly needs to be taught and talked about just like other curriculum. I am very happy to be talking more about alternative decision making for our staff and students rather than just locking the doors, keeping quiet and hiding. We have trained our staff in ALICE and will slowly begin to teach our students more about this process at developmentally appropriate rates. In NO WAY will we be teaching kids to “Counter” an attacker, but we will let them know how to get out of the building just like we would in a fire drill.
HELP NEEDED
To aide our Recess before Lunch program, we are in need of one parent volunteer per day. We need somebody from 11:30-12:40 to help walk students from recess to their coat area and then to lunch. Last year it worked GREAT to have a consistent person each day. If you are available, please think about volunteering for one hour, one day a week. It is a huge help.
Again, my big focus to start this year is on building relationships with students, staff, and families as well as to keep a safe/positive learning environment for all. To do this, we are teaching consistent behavior expectations that fall under three categories: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. We will acknowledge positive behaviors as well as give students the ability to correct poor behaviors. Behavior, like Math and Reading, is something that needs to be taught and retaught.
As we get further into the academic swing of things, now is a great time to begin solidifying at home procedures for homework and bed. Find what works best for your child and your family. Stick with this routine and enjoy the process together. Learning can happen at anytime and anyplace! Enjoy the process and thank you again for all that you do. TOGETHER- we make Bay Harbor a great place to be!
Your Partner In Education,
Tony Ebeling, Principal
