Good Afternoon Sailors,
Fall Fest
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for the wonderful turnout at our Fall Fest. I wanted to also thank all who volunteered to help run this very important family fun and fundraising event. I am so impressed at the level of dedication people have when it comes to supporting our school. It’s an “All Hands on Deck” approach at Bay Harbor, so please continue look for ways to join in the fun.
Parent Teacher Conferences
To me, there is no better time in the year than when we get parents, students, and teachers together to celebrate learning. This partnership is crucial in creating a successful, well-rounded student. Members of our wonderful PTO helped to both the feed teachers both nights and also provide a wonderful book fair experience so that kids can grow their love of literacy as well as fill their book shelves. If I haven’t already mentioned, there is always room on the volunteer list.
Learning
During our day we do a lot of work. We are constantly trying to better understand your child so we can align work/tasks to their level. There are very exciting things happening in the classrooms! One of our big tasks is trying to move more of the responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student. This means that students will better be able to understand the learning target, have choice/voice in how to show they know the target, and then be able to track their growth. so, when students are asked, “What did you learn in math today?”, our hope is that they will answer, “Thank you for asking! Today I learned the difference between a numerator and a denominator and this is what I did to prove it…”
Enjoy your weekend and thank you for your on-going partnership!

4th Annual PTO Holiday Shoppe - Saturday, November 7th - 10:00-1:00
An event for students at Bay Harbor to select gifts for their loved ones with the help of a personal shopper.
It's almost here!!
The PTO would like to invite all Bay Harbor students and siblings to come holiday shopping at our 4th Annual Holiday Shoppe right in our very own school gymnasium! The Holiday Shoppe will be open next Saturday, November 7 from 10am-1pm. Information about the Holiday Shoppe along with "Money Envelopes" to use to mark all of the people the children can shop for and set a "budget" of what they can spend on each person, will be sent home in next week's Take Home Envelopes. The cost of the items range from $.25 to $10.00 and there are gifts for all family members, even your pets! ALSO, be on the lookout on Friday, November 6, for your child to come home with a $1 coupon to spend at the shoppe! Come hungry for breakfast and visit our bake shop while your children shop, where we will have donuts and muffins for sale. We hope you can join us for a fun morning of shopping, eating and getting in the holiday spirit!
NOTE:
911! We are requesting bakery donations to keep the cost down for the people attending the event. Examples are: muffins (Mini or regular), any kind of donuts or donut holes, baked breads sliced, any kind of juices and bottled water. We would like for the items to be dropped off at school by Friday, November 6th at 3pm. Any questions or if you can donate (every little bit helps!) please contact Sarah Gillette at 920-664-0065 (text too) or via email [email protected]. Thank you very much!

Imagine the Symptoms of Autism, CP, Parkinson's and Epilepsy
Meet Kira, a third grader, at Bay Harbor. You may have met Kira as she wheels through the hallways at Bay Harbor, or maybe your child was in her class at one point. Kira was diagnosed at age 2 with Rett syndrome and each year her family shares a little information with her classmates about what Rett syndrome is, as well as how to interact with Kira. In very simple terms, Kira has a damaged gene which regulates a special protein in our bodies that helps us walk, talk and move around. Kira seemed fine at birth, but by 18 months, she was losing skills including standing, her hand use, feeding herself and the few words she had learned. She has developed seizures, scoliosis and uses a feeding tube for most of her nutrition. However, Kira understands you. She uses a special computer that tracks her eyes to communicate (a Tobii) as well as a low tech book called a PODD. She will also answer simple questions with a nod for yes and turning away for no. Kira loves when people get to her level to talk to her. It takes her a little while to organize herself to answer, but be patient. She vocalizes when she is excited. Take time to listen. She also shuts down ( closes her eyes) when she is overwhelmed by noise, lights etc. if you'd like to learn more about Rett syndrome, rettsyndrome.org is a great resource. Rett syndrome is poised to be the first reversed neurological disorder. It has already been reversed in the lab. Please encourage your child to ask questions. Kira's team of teachers and family are willing to answer any and all questions or help find the answers. *************************************

If schools are closed this will also include the cancellation of extracurricular activities and the events in the community pool unless otherwise announced. Please listen to local radio or television stations for school closings or delays. Such weather may also deter students from going outside during the school day. Please be sure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather. In addition to local radio and television, weather conditions can be checked on-line at www.hssd.k12.wi.us.
