A Message from the Principal,
Sailor Families,
Welcome to December and Winter all at once! This is a busy time of year for all and such an enjoyable one for so many reasons. With all of the added excitement, we are doing our best at BH to keep the focus on learning while acknowledging all that comes with the holiday season.
Holiday Concerts
On Friday, December 13th we will be holding our annual holiday concerts which will be at 9:30 and 1:30. As you know, parking is difficult and the seating is not the best, BUT the kids will still look fantastic and put on a wonderful show! It is such a special event for all. Our main doors and recess doors will be open for you and monitored by additional staff. There is no admittance to any of our classrooms or learning wings during this time.
If you or a guardian will be taking your child home following the afternoon concert, PLEASE communicate this ahead of time by CLICKING HERE and the student will meet you in the office area to be dismissed.
There will be no video sales of this year’s event like in the past.
Have a great week,
Tony Ebeling, Principal

What is new in the cafeteria?
Did you know that School Nutrition and our Americorps Farm to School Program has eliminated 60 lbs of waste in your child's lunch program? On October 30th the school nutrition staff began to save their fruit and vegetable scrap that cannot be used or that is leftover at the end of the day instead of throwing it in the garbage. Why are they saving scraps of food you ask? Every day, the food scrap is collected and saved for the vermiculture (worm) compost for the Bay Port garden “Inspiration Acres”. The food scrap is weighed and recorded to log how much food is being saved from landfills and added back into “Inspiration Acres” soil. Lunch/Breakfast Menus Click here to view the monthly menus and nutritional information through "Meal Viewer*". Meal Viewer, our online menu service does all the math for you! You can toggle between breakfast and lunch and select a specific school site along top right hand side of page. Simply click on “Let’s Add It Up” alongside the monthly menu. BREAKFAST MEALS: Overnight peach oatmeal, sunflower seeds, homemade whole grain muffin squares and roasted garbanzo beans are just some of the super healthy and trendy breakfast options you will see on your child's breakfast menu! From your School Board
November 2019 HSSD GRADUATE PROFILE The Howard-Suamico School District (HSSD) vision is an authentic, innovative, connected, and inspired experience for an ever-changing future. In order to achieve this vision for our students, HSSD Graduate Profile has been developed to include seven characteristics that are at the center of learning in our schools and community. Graduate Profile characteristics are critical skills for engaged citizenship, successful career paths, and meaningful community involvement. Graduate Profile characteristics include self-starter, critical thinker, collaborator, communicator, adaptable, responsible, and solutionist. Rigorous academic standards present daily opportunities for students to demonstrate profile characteristics in our classrooms. Foundational academic skills learned and measured alongside the graduate profile characteristics accentuate a whole-student experience in HSSD. Throughout the year, the Board of Education monitors student performance in HSSD Graduate Profile seven characteristics. At the October 21 Board meeting, we talked with teachers from multiple grade levels and observed mathematics lessons in action with students developing critical thinker and solutionist skills. At the November 18 Board meeting, we met with teachers and literacy coaches and observed literacy lessons in action with students growing as communicators. To provide rich learning opportunities, instructional practices are now emphasizing performance tasks so that students can grow and learn these seven characteristics. Seeing our students intentionally developing HSSD Graduate Profile characteristics is exciting and rewarding because we know they are being prepared to thrive in our complex and rapidly changing world. For more information about the Howard-Suamico School District, Board of Education, please visit our website at www.hssdschools.org, or for additional information, please reach out to your Board member located in this article.
