A Message from the Principal,
Bay Harbor Sailor Families,
I can’t believe it is almost OCTOBER! The school year always moves so fast and the kids grow at that same rate. Sadly, we can’t slow things down...though we all wish we could. What we talk about a lot with our staff and students is that though we can’t slow things down, we can be FOCUSED on the goals that we have for the year and make sure that we take steps to make that happen. Goals are key for all of us:)
School safety
Safety in schools continues to be at the forefront of conversations around the United States and a hot topic for media. Specifically in HSSD, our students, parents, and community have called on us to recommit to ongoing and comprehensive training in this area. Recently, the district was awarded $180,381, from the school safety grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice. This grant will fund the majority of costs related to both safety and security training (ALICE), as well as trauma sensitive training in our district.
ALICE training is not new to HSSD. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training provides preparation and a plan for individuals and organizations on how to proactively handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. The staff will continue to be deeply trained in the ALICE practices so that we can be the most prepared in the event of an emergency. With that comes on-going safety practices and conversations with students at an appropriate developmental level. I have just completed meeting with all grade levels by going over the parts of ALICE. For K-2 this meant reading a book called “I’m Not Scared...I’m Prepared because I know all about ALICE” by Julia Cook. CLICK HERE to view a youtube video of this book being read. In grade 3-4 I focused more on some informational slides and some scenarios by which we would have to evacuate a school. After the student training, grade levels will be taking a walk to our “Rally Point” nearby that we would get to in the event of an evacuation.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Together is Better

BAY HARBOR GIVING TREE FOOD DRIVE - STARTS NEXT WEEK!
Bay Harbor is holding its Giving Tree Food Drive as of this coming Monday, October 1st through Friday, October 19th. Bins will be set up in the main hallway for non-perishable food item drop off. This year we are asking that when your child brings in donated food items, that boxed and canned items would be brought to school in separate bags. We have learned that when canned items end up on top of boxed items in the bins, damage to the boxed items can occur, and the Giving Tree wants to be able to use all of the food items donated.
In addition to the food drive, our 4th graders will be volunteering at the "Feed My Starving Children" Mobile packing event on Tuesday, October 2. Students will also be visiting the Giving Tree Food Pantry the end of the month to volunteer stocking the shelves with the food items Bay Harbor collected.
Thank you in advance.
