A Message from the Principal...
Hello Sailor Families,
Though the freezing temps have seemed to slow down the shipping industry, our school “Harbors” have been open for learning and for fun. The end of the second quarter is on Friday and report cards will be ready to view the week after. This is the “Mid Year” point and a great check to see how students are progressing towards competency on the standards. This time of year is also FULL of assessments: Running Records (Reading), PALS (K-2), MAP testing, Report Card Assessing, etc. We need to continue to check in with each student so that we can adjust our teaching plan to ensure the most academic growth possible. There are three main parts to make a successful student/learner: Family, Student, School. When all three work together towards a common goal, GREAT THINGS HAPPEN! Let’s continue to work TOGETHER to ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills to succeed in a changing world.
On a side note, My wife and I are heading out to Aspen, CO. tonight as specials guests of Nick Baumgartner at the Winter X-Games. As you may recall, Nick came to our school last year and spoke to our kids about setting goals and never giving up. Nick represented the USA in the Olympics last year in addition to being a part of the thrilling X-games. Nick will be boarding at the X-games in Aspen, Colorado on Friday. The race will be televised on ESPN 3 from 12-3pm. The students at Bay Harbor have been “Nick” and snowboard crazy since his visit. I am excited to go out there, take some video and pics, and share with the students! Nick will be coming back to BH again to share his recent experiences with the kids.
Enjoy the rest of the week and the weekend!

To welcome the New Year, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade students have spent the month of January learning about Diversity and Self-Esteem. Our main focus was learning the fact that we are all very different and thank goodness for that or life would be rather boring! J We spent time celebrating our unique differences and ways that we are special. Being different from each other also means we can learn a lot from other people’s strengths and talents.
As winter is really starting to settle in and there are also many assessments occurring, we discussed multiple ways to boost our own and other people’s self-esteem. Students understand there will be many “wrinkles” in their self-esteem along life’s journey, but that it is how you cope with those that count! Students were challenged with doing something nice for someone else to boost their own self-esteem. They LOVE talking about how they are special…. J Becky Wright Bay Harbor Elementary School Counselor Thank you to those who donated a box or more of Kleenex tissues for our health room. We really appreciate it!
