Welcome Back Sailor Families,
It has been another wonderful start to the school year at Bay Harbor. Happy kids, Happy parents, and Happy staff are easy measures of a GREAT SCHOOL. I personally thank you for all that you do to prepare your kids to be learners and good people. I would also like to take this opportunity to cover some key things:
Assessment Day
On Monday, September 14th, we will be holding an assessment day. During this time, teachers will read with individual students to better understand their needs and to better plan for individualized instruction. When not being assessed, students will be moving different stations around the school. These stations will focus on: Being a leader, Being a good friend, and Childhood cancer awareness month. We are always in need of help on these days, so if anyone as an hour or two (or more) to spare, please let the office know (662-8800)
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September)
We will be supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at Bay Harbor. As some of you may know, one of our first graders is beating cancer and is on her tail end of chemotherapy so we want to support her and many other families that are affected by this disease. Starting this Friday night at the BP football game and stretching through next week, we will be participating in activities to draw awareness and show support. Watch for more information to come via email in the next day.
HELP NEEDED
During our Recess/Lunch time we are in need of one parent volunteer per day. We need somebody from 11:00-12:00 to help walk students from recess to their coat area and then to lunch. If you are available, please think about volunteering for one hour, one day a week (or more). It is a huge help and a great way to stay connected with the school and students. Contact the office if you are interested (662-8800)
PTO
Our first meeting of the year was last night and largely attended. I am reaching out to let you know that even if you can’t go to meetings, you can still help support the school by being a committee member, volunteering time at an event, etc. Our PTO is a wonderful supporter of our students, staff, school, and ultimately the families at Bay Harbor. A new PTO website is being built and we will be excited to show it off soon!
Morning Drop Off / Afternoon Pick-up:
If at any point you are coming into the building with or without your child, please be sure to park your car in a marked parking spot. We cannot leave vehicles unattended in the front of the school...even for a short time.
Lastly, my big focus to start this year is on building relationships with students, staff, and families as well as to keep a safe/positive learning environment for all. To do this, we are teaching consistent behavior expectations that fall under these categories: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be a Leader. We will acknowledge positive behaviors as well as give students the ability to correct poor choices and learn from them.
Enjoy the “little things” that happen daily and thank you again for all that you do. TOGETHER- we make Bay Harbor a great place to be!

Labels For Education has brought back their $1 Million Giveaway this year. Last year, we were one of 1,000 schools to win the $1,000 grand prize! This year, they are increasing the prize money to $10,000 for 100 lucky schools! How can you help our chances of winning? For every Labels for Education UPC we send in, we get an entry into the sweepstakes. Want to increase our chances? Print out this form - Click here - and attach 5 labels from participating products. Those 5 products just earned us 25 entries! You probably have 5 of these products in your cupboards right now—Campbell’s soup, Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish Crackers, Pace, V8, Spaghettio’s, Swanson, Prego, or Bic. Send in as many forms as you can to help increase our chances of winning. Sending in just the labels is helpful too—I will use student volunteers to help complete the forms. This contest ends on October 9th. Completed forms and labels can be sent to school with your child or dropped off in the designated drawers in the parent hallway. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thanks for supporting our school! Dawn Brandt, Volunteer Coordinator [email protected] Thank you to Leslie Frank and David Gillette for providing the delicious "Welcome Back" lunch for staff on August 27th! We appreciate all you do! Assessment Day this Monday - Help Needed!
This Monday, September 14th, we will be holding an assessment day. On that day we will also have 10 stations set up that students will be rotating to throughout the day between 9:30 - 2:30. We are in need of volunteers to help the teacher at each of these stations. If you can spare an hour or more to help on Monday, please call the school office. We will let you know what station (s) you will be at when you you arrive that day. Thank you! NFL Pass, Punt & Kick! - Next Week! Bay Harbor will be holding its eighth annual NFL Pass, Punt & Kick competition! The event will be completed during your child’s scheduled physical education class throughout the week of September 14th. All boys and girls ages 6 and up are eligible to participate. Each Student will be given one pass, one punt and one kick off a football tee during the contest. All three scores will be combined for a total distance. Distance and Accuracy are important! There will be 1st – 3rd place winners in each category (6/7 Boys, 6/7 Girls, 8/9 Boys, 8/9 Girls, 10/11 Boys, 10/11 Girls). The first place finisher in each category will advance to the sectional level of competition. The sectional competition location is still pending. All physical education classes will practice prior to the competition! If you have any questions please contact Mr. Vanden Hoogen – 662-8855 Good Luck to all participants! Hearing Screening Coming Soon! - Volunteers Needed!
The Brown County Health Department staff will be coming to Bay Harbor Elementary to provide Hearing and Vision Screenings for the designated grades and other requested students. The Hearing Screening will occur on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. All Kindergartners, 1st graders, any new students to the district, and any students requested by teachers or parents/guardians will be tested. If your child does not pass the initial hearing screening, a rescreen will be performed in four to six weeks to determine if there is a persistent hearing problem. If they still do not pass, a letter will be sent home indicating the importance of following up with a physician and/or audiologist. The screening is not a substitute for a regular examination by your physician but is meant to identify persistent hearing loss in children and bring it to the attention of parents/guardians and teachers. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you DO NOT want your child screened for hearing and/or vision YOU MUST contact your child’s school at least one week prior to the screening date to have your child removed from the screening list. NOTE: 2 volunteers are needed to help with this screening from approximately 8:30 until 10:30. If you could help, please call the school office at 662-8800. Thank you! Volunteer Help is needed during Lunch Time
A volunteer is needed each day, Monday through Friday, to help our supervisors transition students from recess to the lunchroom. The time frame for this would be from 11:00 until noon. If you would be able to commit to helping out one day each week please call the school office at 662-8800. If you could help out once in a while and could be called if someone couldn't make it in, please let us know. Your help would be greatly appreciated! A Note from the Physical Education Department
Appropriate Shoes Athletic style shoes are necessary for your child’s safety during class activities. Students need to wear clean gym/tennis shoes to class each day. Platform shoes, hiking boots, shoes with a heel, sandals or shoes that leave black marks on the gym floor are not allowed. Please check your child’s physical education schedule and have them dressed appropriately and ready for participation on those days. Notes from Home Students will try all activities. These activities will be modified for medical purposes or for exceptional students. An excuse from home is required if your child can not participate. If no excuse is available the student will participate to the best of his/her ability on that particular day. Stay Active! Mr. Vanden Hoogen 662-8855 Read t- Shirt Order Form
