Many of our of staff and students had the opportunity to be part of our flag retirement ceremony last week. We needed to replace our flag that flies in front of the school as it was looking worn and tattered so, Bob Brown, a parent at our school and also a Cubmaster, helped to direct and explain this ceremony. Here is some information he wrote regarding the "life cycle of an American Flag". As you know the American flag represents our nation to the rest of the world. This means that when people see our flag they think of us, so we want to honor our flags like we honor our nation and ourselves. A flag is at the end of its life when it fits this United State Flag Code definition: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." The old flag was in such a state with many rips and tears in it. As you lower a retiring flag you say words honoring the flag and its service to our nation. The old flag will then have a burning ceremony where it will be honored with many more kind words. It will be cut into strips or pieces save the field of blue stars, for the stars represent the Union of the States and no one should ever divide it. The flag will then be burned completely. This particular flag’s ceremony will be carried out by the Boy Scouts of America. The new flag is lovely and ready to represent our nation to everyone who sees it. It is fitting to say a few words honoring that flag and all it represents as it is raised the first time. Long may our new flag wave! Also, contact the school office when an address, phone number and/or contact information changes. It is important to keep student records accurate in case parents need to be contacted in an emergency situation. It also ensures accurate communication between school and home. |

This room is utilized by all of the staff to enrich students’ literacy skills – primarily in a guided reading setting. In order to help upgrade the resources in this room, we are holding a fundraiser at all Gallagher’s Pizza locations on Tuesday, June 3rd. Please help support Bay Harbor by grabbing a bite to eat from Gallagher’s that day (lunch or dinner). You can even do carry-out or delivery! All you need to do is present the flyer, relax, and enjoy some good eats! Gallagher’s will then donate 20% of the proceeds, from the families that presented the flyers, to Bay Harbor! The flyer will be sent home in the Wednesday Take Home Envelopes on Wednesday, May 28th. Extra flyers will be sent home so you can share them with friends and family! Thank you so much for your continued support! Click here to see the flyer. What you can do to help: - Tell your friends and family about the event – share the flyers when you get them! - Write a blurb in your newsletters and/or websites about the event - Ask your students/families to “save the date” A 20% kickback is pretty huge!
